Tech Writer EDC: A Hands-On SEO Project Built for Link Building and Affiliate Marketing

Tech Writer EDC was launched as a personal SEO project by the founder of Coastal Marketing Strategies. The idea was to build a real-world testing ground for link building, affiliate SEO, and content strategy. The site focuses on everyday carry gear—knives, tools, flashlights, and other utility equipment—with detailed product reviews, buying guides, and industry commentary.

This wasn’t just a side hobby—it was a way to refine SEO tactics in a highly competitive niche, where content quality, domain authority, and organic backlinks make or break a site’s success. Everything was built with long-term growth, search visibility, and monetization in mind.

The Challenge

The challenge with Tech Writer EDC was two-fold. First, the EDC niche is incredibly saturated. Hundreds of review sites compete for the same commercial-intent keywords like “best EDC flashlight” or “tactical knife reviews.” Ranking without a strong backlink profile or trusted domain is nearly impossible.

Second, since this was a brand-new domain, we started from zero—no traffic, no links, and no content history. We had to grow authority, build trust, and attract organic traffic from scratch. That meant focusing on SEO fundamentals, avoiding shortcuts, and relying on strategic content development to gain traction.

The Approach

We built Tech Writer EDC on a clean, lightweight theme optimized for speed and mobile UX. From the start, every page followed best practices in technical SEO—including proper heading structures, schema markup, image optimization, and internal linking.

The heart of the strategy was content. We used SEO copywriting to create long-form guides targeting low-competition and long-tail keywords. Every article was written to provide real value to users, with an emphasis on hands-on reviews, photography, and clear formatting.

To build authority, we tested multiple link building strategies—guest posting, HARO outreach, resource page inclusion, and internal asset linking. We also built niche-relevant citations and used Google Maps Optimization tactics where possible for gear brands with local presence.

Monetization was layered in gradually. We used affiliate programs like Amazon Associates and direct partnerships with gear manufacturers. Conversion-focused design and website development helped ensure users could easily click through to purchase, while content stayed focused on search intent.

Today, Tech Writer EDC ranks for hundreds of EDC-related search terms and receives consistent organic traffic. It generates passive affiliate revenue and continues to serve as a live testing environment for digital marketing strategies that we apply to client projects at Coastal Marketing Strategies.
